How it all started

Establishing a religious
community

Founded in 1579 in Vicenza by Father Antonio Pagani, the Institute emerged during a time of religious renewal following the Council of Trent. Supported by Bishop Matteo Priuli, it sought to establish a religious community dedicated to both spiritual devotion and active charity.

Living a consecrated life

Company of the Dimesse

Unlike traditional cloistered communities, this new family, known as the “Company of the Dimesse” or “Company of the Glorious Virgin Mother of God,” adopted a “secular” model. Members lived a consecrated life without taking public vows, which allowed them to serve freely outside of an enclosed setting.

Mercy In Action

Institute served Vicenza’s neediest

Guided by a spirit of fraternity and community, the Institute served Vicenza’s neediest, focusing on the young, the sick, and prisoners. Through catechesis, material aid, and Christian education, it fulfilled both spiritual and practical needs of the community, embodying a new model of faith through action.

Journey from Italy to Africa

Missionary Openness

The mission of the congregation evolved in various dioceses in Italy until during the Vatican II council when it opened itself to mission outside Europe. In the 1950's, a great missionary enthusiasm broke out in the Diocese of Padua. It was provoked by the Bishop of Padua Monsignor Girolamo Bortignon and Monsignor Moletta who was the director of the missionary office of Padua. In addition, it was in response to the encyclical of Pius the XII “Fidei Donum” (gift of faith), inviting the clergy, congregations, and the laity to raise up an apostolic energy with a special attention towards the church in Africa. This enthusiasm was also felt in our congregation, especially when we were challenged by the Bishop of Padua to be missionaries in Kenya.
